Airport strike notices, Italy

Airport strike notices in Italy: dates and EU 261

Usually no compensation, always care. Airport staff do not work for the airline, and the Court of Justice has said a strike by them may be an extraordinary circumstance. Meals, a hotel when needed and the choice of a refund are owed whatever the cause.

General information, not legal advice. Not a promise of payment.

What the calendar lists now

The Italian transport ministry’s calendar read on 16 October 2026 lists a 24-hour notice for Pisa and Florence on 30 October, concerning staff of Toscana Aeroporti, GH Toscana and Consulta. It no longer lists the earlier Pisa/Florence notice for 16 October. Venice Marco Polo’s Sicuritalia IVRI staff notice remains listed for 22 November. The calendar does not explain what happened to individual flights on 16 October; this page does not infer cancellation or compensation from a notice.

Two airports, another notice in Venice

The Pisa/Florence entry is under air transport and gives 30 October as both first and last day, with 24 hours from 00:00 to 23:59. It names union OSP USB Lavoro Privato and the three airport-service employers, with proclamation dated 12 October. The Venice entry gives 22 November, 00:00 to 23:59, union OST FISASCAT-CISL and employer Sicuritalia IVRI at Marco Polo airport, proclaimed on 5 October.

The ministry’s calendar, read on 16 October 2026. These entries are airport-staff notices; the easyJet crew notice has a separate page.

What EU 261 says

Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 excuses an airline from paying compensation if it proves extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken (Article 5(3)). In Airhelp v SAS (C-28/20), paragraph 42, the Court of Justice gave strikes by airport staff as an example of what may be such a circumstance. The airline still has to prove it, and to show that it took all reasonable measures.

For meals, hotel, refund and rebooking conditions, use the delay-by-hours guide and refund guide. The causes guide distinguishes a staff notice from evidence of the cause of a particular flight disruption.

Evidence for this notice

  1. Use the latest listed airport date. The 16 October calendar lists Pisa and Florence on 30 October and Venice Marco Polo on 22 November. Keep a copy of the dated listing; do not use the former 16 October Pisa/Florence entry as proof of a current notice.
  2. Distinguish airport staff from airline crew. The Pisa/Florence entry names Toscana Aeroporti, GH Toscana and Consulta; Venice names Sicuritalia IVRI. These are different notices from the easyJet flight-crew notice for 16 October.
  3. Connect the notice to your flight. Keep your flight number, travel date and the airline’s explanation of the disruption. A notice alone cannot establish the cause or final delay of your journey. Read the causes guide before responding to an airline’s reason.

Questions about this notice

Are Pisa and Florence still listed for 16 October?

Not in the calendar read on 16 October 2026. It lists the Toscana Aeroporti, GH Toscana and Consulta staff notice for 30 October instead, proclaimed on 12 October. The current listing alone does not say what happened to any flight on 16 October.

Is Venice Marco Polo on the same date as Pisa and Florence?

No. In the calendar read on 16 October, Venice Marco Polo’s Sicuritalia IVRI notice is on 22 November 2026. Pisa and Florence are listed on 30 October. The notices concern different employers and unions.

Is AirwayControl a claims company?

No. It tells you which rules cover your route and writes the claim, and you send it from your own email. AirwayControl never sends or handles a claim for you, and takes no share.
